After completing the book, I definitely liked that topics
covered in the third part the best. The author discussed topics like the issues
of the working poor and breaking the cycle of poverty. Poverty is big concern
and our society has been lost in trying to find a way to break the cycle. If more
people had jobs, we would have a greener economy. Not only are people living in
poverty struggling, but so are the tax payers. I agree with the author when she talks about
coming up with more creative strategies to help boost the economy. Abramsky talked
about putting the brakes on homelessness and how to improve it. One thing that I
found interesting was that children in state foster care were more likely to
end up on the streets because once they become adults, they are sent out on
their own with barley any assistance. It is upsetting to hear that Illinois is
really struggling with this problem. “University of Chicago researchers who
have compared Illinois with neighboring states that continue to remove all benefits
from foster kids at the age of 18 have found that a lower percentage of
ex-foster kids in Illinois end up homeless than is the case elsewhere” (Abramsky,
267). Our society needs to prepare future generations for success. Better school
systems should be put into place so that more children can go to college and
break the cycle of poverty in the family. Improving classroom settings can
decrease violence and the use of drugs in a community. Potential test question:
In what ways can we improve our communities to help break the cycle of poverty?
