Bethany Kuhlig Post
I have really enjoyed this book, although I find a lot of it depressing! This book has so many different stories that are hard to read but it has given me so many different views on poverty and those in it. Something that really resonated with me in this reading was on page 127. I came from a city in Iowa that had major industries that employed many of the people in town. During the 1990’s many of these factories and companies either closed or left town or a lot of people lost their jobs. In the book, it discusses a similar situation. According to the book, Detroit has been experiencing this kind of drought since the 1960’s. This is when production in factories began to change. This cut the number of jobs down significantly. Eventually the factories left Detroit. This caused many of the families that had lived in that city for generations to leave and find other employment. What is left of Detroit is a sad city filled with hopelessness. This can be seen all over the country in many of the once great cities. I feel like this is a major theme of this section, hopelessness and loss.
My potential test question is: How did the housing bust in 2009 hit different races and people groups?
