Kaitlin Fruehe's Post

Kaitlin Fruehe

The next section of this book was easier to understand and comprehend. Reading some of these personal stories in the book has taught me a lot about poverty and has shown me that this is a bigger issue in our country than I ever imagined it was. Each story shows me that every situation is different and that so many people are struggling. This section of the book covered the struggle our society faces with safety nets, political and economic conditions, policies and the welfare system. One thing that really stood out to me was that people in poverty were struggling with getting health care. “Until all the major Affordable Care Act provisions kick in, in 2014, most states won’t extend Medicaid to childless adults” (Abramsky, 224). I agree with Abramsky when she talks about reusing what was good about the old welfare system to build a better one for our country. Potential test question: What are some of the problems are society is currently facing do to the recession?
